Does writing come easily and naturally to you? When reading websites, do you sometimes see way that the text could be improved so that the content is more appealing to the person viewing the site? Do you like the idea of being able to set your own hours, work from home and write on a large variety of different topics? If so, you might seriously want to think about becoming a copywriter.

Copywriters provide freelance writing services to both individuals and businesses. This work can range from simple editing of existing web content to the development of all different kinds of marketing materials for existing and emerging businesses. Copywriters have the opportunity to work with a really diverse group of people and to learn about all different kinds of businesses and topics which can be a fun and interesting way to spend your time. And since copywriters work for themselves, they have a lot of flexibility in what work they do and don’t take on.

Of course, if you think that you want to become a copywriter, you have to know about the down sides of the job as well. It can sometimes be difficult to find work which may require you to take on side jobs or copywriting jobs that you don’t enjoy in order to get your bills paid. You have to file your own taxes and otherwise take care of business on your own. And there can sometimes be a sense of isolation when working alone all day on copywriting. However, there are going to be challenges with any job and many people who become copywriters find that the benefits outweigh the challenges.

If you want to become a copywriter, there are a few things that you need to do:

  • Set up a website that describes your copywriting experience and shows samples of your work. If you don’t have samples, you need to write some. Include your bio so that potential employers can learn a little bit about you.
  • Get your copywriting resume up to date. Seek out samples and mirror yours after those so that you look professional even if you’re just getting started.
  • Get active on copywriting freelance sites. Most freelancers get their work through freelance bid sites where jobs are posted. You need to get used to using these, bidding appropriately on jobs and seeing what’s out there.
  • Learn about Craigslist. This website has writing gigs and writing jobs listed daily.
  • Spread the word. Get business cards, send out brochures, do an email campaign … people need to know that you’re a copywriter if you’re going to become a working one!
  • Write!!! Even if you aren’t working a lot yet, you need to get in the habit of sitting down and writing for a set number of hours each day. This is what copywriters do, so start doing it.

Becoming a copywriter is one of the easiest work-at-home jobs that there is as far as getting started. There aren’t a lot of costs involved in getting going and you can really dedicate as much or as little time to it as you’d like. It’s definitely hard work in terms of the fact that there’s competition out there but if you’re dedicated to doing it, you can become a copywriter.
